Thick stems, closely spaced buds, a naturally layered habit, and tolerance for pruning make this our top Japanese maple bonsai pick. Our plants are budded very low on the root stock to give an unobtrusive graft union. In the garden, it is a true dwarf, so it can be safely planted very close to a walkway or kept for years in a large container until just the perfect spot for it becomes obvious. Exceptional; it belongs in even a modest collection of Japanese maple varieties for its distinctive dwarf and trouble-free character .

More strongly weeping than most selections in its group, and wider color changes: orange to red to dark greenish red and back to bright red-orange in the fall.

Unlike most "red" selections that are in fact purple this is more true red. Its color remains vibrant throughout the summer. Smaller than most dissectums, with black bark and a slower growth habit, this maple is a good choice for bonsai or a container.

Although not as lacy or fast growing as some clones, this laceleaf maple holds its dark purple-red leaf color better than others and is especially vigorous in hot climates. Spring color is crimson and fall color is scarlet.

It seems there are several clones going around under this name because there are at least two different dwarf Ginkgo trees at Spring Grove Cemetery in Ohio. We don't know which this is or if it is both; we started with more than one plant. But we do know they are dwarf and very attractive in conical growth habit.

Half the size of most other cultivars, this one shares their tough constitution and season-long appeal. Upright flowers emerge cream-colored and become a surprising wine-red color with age.

Another remarkable release from the U.S. National Arboretum's shrub breeding program in McMinnville, Tenn. in 2013 for which they should be rightly proud.
